Four seasons in the Harz

Braunlage lies between 550 and 971 metres above sea level, right on the edge of the Harz National Park. Every season brings its own reason to be here.

Snow on the doorstep.

Winter, December to March. The Wurmberg is the largest alpine ski area in northern Germany, with more than 13 km of pistes, a cable car and a 1.6 km toboggan run. From December to early February, the Sagenhafter Wintermarkt (winter market) draws people into the town centre, and the Harzer Falken play ice hockey at the ice rink. And afterwards: your own sauna.

Calm before the crowds.

Spring, March to May. March and April belong to those in search of quiet: empty trails, the first warm days on the terrace, the sauna in the evening. Easter brings the town to life, and on 30 April Braunlage celebrates Walpurgis Night with a parade and fire show in the Kurpark (spa gardens).

Long evenings outdoors.

Summer, June to August. Braunlage borders the Harz National Park, and the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg trail passes through the town on its route around the Brocken. On the Wurmberg there is a bike park, monster scooters and mountain carts. In the evening: a barbecue in the garden, the terrace, sunset over the rooftops.

Golden moments in autumn light.

Autumn, September to November. When the beech woods change colour, the Harz is at its best for walking. Collect stamps for the Harzer Wandernadel hiking badge, or visit the Brocken or the Oderteich reservoir. In November the town goes quiet: the best time for a few days with nothing but the sauna, a book and candlelight.
